Welcome to Modern Alternative Mama!
Modern Alternative Mama was started because I had so many thoughts in my head and nowhere to put them! I needed to share all of the "weird" things I do, like buying food straight from the farm, extended breastfeeding, fermenting random things, and much more. And since I could never stop talking about it, yet I rarely found someone who wanted to listen, this site was born.
In general, we strive to follow the Bible’s teachings and to live life as close to the way God intended. That means in what we eat, building our family, medical/health care, cleaning, finances, and more. Check the resources section for more information on our life and help in case you're interested in trying some of these things, too!
We have TONS of information here to help you, if you're interested! First, there's the blog. Here, you'll find many different articles about health, food, child rearing, and lots more! We love comments, but please, prayerfully consider your words. Second, there's the meal plan section. Not sure what to eat for dinner? Curious what a real-food family eats? Check it out!
Finally, if you aren't sure where to go first, check out the Getting Started section. All the posts are archived by series or category, so you'll find exactly what you're looking for.
And please, if you have any questions, contact us and ask.
Enjoy our site!
About Us

My name is Kate, and I’m 26. My husband is Ben, who is 27. We got married on July 29th, 2006, and have been happily married ever since (5 years now)! On January 26, 2008, we welcomed our daughter, Rebekah, who is now 3 and a half. On July 16, 2009, we welcomed our son, Daniel, who was born at home, and is now 2. What an amazing experience! Then, on August 5th, 2011, we welcomed our second son, Jacob, also born at home.
Now, I write on this blog, I do guest posting at many other wonderful blogs, and I run a local real-food group (we have access to pastured meats, eggs, raw milk, and also do bulk nuts, vanilla beans, Green Pastures products, and more) for those who want top-quality food! Contact me if you're interested in learning more about that (I'm in Columbus, OH). I'm also beginning to homeschool Rebekah, we are active in our church and a couple local playgroups, and in my "free" time (haha), I enjoy cooking, sewing, and other crafty things.
You'll find a lot of recipes and cookbooks here, because developing recipes has always been a passion of mine. From the time I was 7 or 8 and tall enough to reach the stove, I was trying to cook. I started out making food from cans and boxes. By the time I was 19, I was sick of college cafeteria food and I started to teach myself to really cook. I watched the Food Network obsessively and studied their recipes, notes on ingredients, and techniques. I mimicked them and tried stuff. My poor family had to eat my early experiments -- not always winners!
By the time I was in my early 20s, I had found real food and cooking took on a totally new meaning to me. I had to cook if I wanted to eat well! I continued to study and try out techniques. I conquered one "area" of cooking at a time (yes -- all my sauces used to come out bland and flavorless, and all my cakes used to come out flat) until I had mastered cooking with recipes. Then I set out on my own to combine my favorite ingredients and create recipes. I started to succeed more and more often, and realized I could finally achieve my dream of writing my own cookbook. Real Food Basics came out in October, 2010 and has since sold over 350 copies (as of October, 2011).
Our plan is to continue to release cookbooks every 3 or 4 months, and to expand recipe offerings -- tips, hints, tutorials, choosing ingredients, and much more. We even have an awesome addition to the site coming in this area early next year -- but shh, it's still a secret. :)
Through this blog you'll get to know us even more, so jump right in!
